“Protection”

Collaboration with Pooja Lalwani

Collaged film photographs in a triple layer lightbox, 2025.

A message from farmers: “When we protect nature, nature protects us.”

I’d been thinking about expanding my Lightbox practice to incorporate multiple layers, to play with depth and perspective. Returning to New York with photos for my book Satnam, Pooja invited me to her studio to see her work. She was photoshopping her photographs to create compositions (see here), and we decided to work on this project together.

Pooja processed two photos I took in Kitulgala, Sri Lanka (one of tea farmers and another of the sun shining through leaves) with one she took in Goa, and taught me some photoshop along the way. She also got us into a wood shop to build the frame ourselves (pics below).

Read more about Satnam the coffee table book here (and see some of its other visuals), and check out Pooja’s incredible work here. <3
